What next-day delivery really means

"Next-day delivery" is a phrase every UK supplier uses and few define. It can mean the parcel arrives the day after you order, or the day after it is eventually dispatched, which may be a week later. For a laboratory planning an experiment the difference is the whole point. • Cut-off: orders placed before 2pm, Monday to Friday, are dispatched the same day.
• Service: tracked next-working-day courier from UK stock. Tracking is emailed at dispatch.
• Arrival: the next working day after dispatch for mainland UK addresses; Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland can take a day longer.
• After the cut-off: orders placed after 2pm, or at weekends and bank holidays, are dispatched the next working day and arrive the working day after that.

So an order at 11am on Tuesday arrives Wednesday; an order at 4pm on Friday is dispatched Monday and arrives Tuesday.

Why the cut-off exists

Same-day dispatch means the vials are picked from the freezer, checked against the order and the batch record, packed in a rigid inner box and padded outer, labelled and collected by the courier that afternoon. Reading other suppliers' promises

• "Next-day delivery" with no dispatch time stated: ask when it is dispatched. Next-day from a dispatch that takes five days is a five-day delivery.

• "Free delivery": fine, but check the service; untracked or economy post is a poor way to move glass vials.
• "Express" upgrades at high cost: often the only tracked, next-day option, priced as an extra.
• No mention of a courier or tracking: ask.
