Research peptides sold in the UK originate from three broad places: manufacturers in China, where most of the world's synthetic peptide capacity sits; distributors and specialist suppliers in the United States; and UK-based suppliers who either hold stock domestically or resell imports. Each route has real advantages and real costs, and price alone hides most of them. This note compares the three on the factors that matter to a laboratory: material quality and verification, transit and customs, legal exposure, support and continuity, and landed cost. Where the peptides actually come from

Almost all research peptides, whichever flag the supplier flies, are synthesised in a small number of large facilities, predominantly in China, with some capacity in the US and Europe. The question is therefore rarely "who made it" and almost always "who tested it, who holds it, and who is accountable for it". A UK supplier and a US supplier may sell material from the same synthesis facility; what differs is what happened between the facility and your bench.

Buying direct from a manufacturer abroad

• Price: lowest per mg at the invoice, often much lower.
• Verification: manufacturer's own QC certificate; independent testing rare unless you commission it. Minimum order quantities are often large.

• Accountability: limited; disputes are difficult across jurisdictions.
• Best for: laboratories buying at scale with their own analytical capacity to verify each lot.

Buying from a US supplier

• Price: mid-range; the US research peptide market is large and competitive.
• Verification: variable, from excellent (independent COAs per batch) to poor; the market has both.
• Transit and customs: one to two weeks; import VAT and fees as above; USD pricing and exchange exposure.
• Accountability: US consumer law does not help a UK buyer much; returns are impractical.
• Best for: compounds not stocked in the UK.

Buying from a UK supplier

• Price: higher per mg at the invoice, comparable or lower on landed cost once import charges and time are counted.

Add to any foreign invoice: import VAT at 20% on goods plus shipping, courier handling fees, exchange-rate margin, and the cost of your time if a parcel is held.
