Third-party versus in-house peptide testing
Three arrangements that all get called tested, why independence matters, and the six questions that separate the real thing from the phrase.
"Third-party tested" is one of the most used phrases in the research peptide market and one of the least defined. It can mean an independent accredited laboratory ran the analysis and signed the certificate, or it can mean the manufacturer's own QC department produced a document that a reseller then forwarded. This note sets out the difference between in-house and third-party testing, why independence matters, the questions that distinguish real independence from the phrase, and how Alphex's testing is arranged. Three arrangements that all get called "tested"
- Manufacturer in-house QC. The synthesis facility runs HPLC and MS on its own product and issues a certificate. Competent, routine, and the source of most COAs in circulation. Its weakness is structural: the party certifying the material is the party selling it.
- Reseller-forwarded manufacturer COA. A UK supplier buys bulk material and passes on the manufacturer's document, sometimes rebranded, sometimes with the manufacturer's name removed. The supplier has verified nothing themselves. Often described as "third-party" because the manufacturer is a third party to the reseller, which is not what the buyer understands by the phrase.
- Independent laboratory testing. A laboratory with no stake in the sale receives a sample of the batch, analyses it, and issues a certificate under its own name, with its own reference standard and method. This is what "third-party tested" ought to mean.
Why independence matters
Not because manufacturers are dishonest, but because incentives shape rounding. A borderline batch at 98.6% is a pass at a 98% specification and a fail at 99%; the party that has to discard it if it fails is the party you would rather not have drawing the integration baseline. An independent laboratory has no batch to lose. Independence also brings a second reference standard, a second instrument and a second method, which is a genuine check on systematic error rather than a repeat of the same measurement.
Questions that separate the real thing from the phrase
- What is the laboratory's name? If the supplier will not say, or the COA has the name redacted, treat it as in-house.
- Is the laboratory's name and report reference on the COA itself? Not just on the supplier's website.
- Does the laboratory sell peptides? If yes, it is not independent of the market.
- Was this batch tested, or the product line? Independent testing of one batch a year ago does not cover today's stock. See why batch matching matters.

- What accreditation does the laboratory hold? ISO/IEC 17025 for the relevant methods is the gold standard; not every competent laboratory holds it, but it is a strong signal.
How Alphex arranges testing
Every Alphex batch is analysed by an independent laboratory that does not sell peptides, using its own reference standard, by reverse-phase HPLC at 220 nm. The laboratory's name and report reference appear on the certificate together with the batch number, the chromatogram and the spectrum. We do not forward manufacturer QC documents as our COA. What in-house testing is still good for
Manufacturer QC is not worthless. It is the first filter, it catches gross failures before material ships, and its data can be compared with the independent result as a consistency check. The problem is not its existence but its presentation as something it is not. A supplier who says "manufacturer COA plus independent verification of every batch" is being clearer than one who says "third-party tested" and means the former alone.
