Research use only: what it means legally
The phrase is the legal basis of the sale. What it says about the product, what it commits supplier and purchaser to, and how it differs from related labels.
"For research use only" appears on every Alphex label, product page and invoice. It is sometimes read as boilerplate and sometimes, less charitably, as a wink. It is neither. It is the legal basis of the sale, and it places obligations on both the supplier and the purchaser. This note explains what the phrase means in UK law, what it commits each side to, and how it differs from the "in vitro diagnostic" and "not for human consumption" labels seen on other products. What it says about the product
A substance's legal category in the UK depends heavily on presentation and intended purpose. The same peptide can be a laboratory reagent, an unlicensed medicine, or a food supplement ingredient depending on how it is offered and for what. "Research use only" is the supplier's declaration that the product is offered as a laboratory reagent for scientific investigation, not as a medicine, not for administration to humans or animals, and not for any consumer purpose. That declaration, if it is truthful and consistent with everything else the supplier does, keeps the product outside the medicines regime and allows it to be sold lawfully without a marketing authorisation. What it commits the supplier to
- Making no claims about effects in humans or animals, expressly or by implication, anywhere: product pages, notes, adverts, social media, customer correspondence.
- Not providing dosing, administration or "protocol" information for human or animal use.
- Labelling and packaging consistently with laboratory reagent status.
- Selling to purchasers who confirm research use, and declining orders that indicate otherwise.
- Not selling in consumer-style presentations (pre-filled devices, kits with administration equipment) that contradict the stated purpose.

What it commits the purchaser to
By ordering, the purchaser confirms that they are acquiring the material for laboratory research, that they are competent to handle it, and that they accept responsibility for compliant use within their jurisdiction and institution. That includes institutional approvals for any regulated research, safe handling and storage, and lawful disposal. The supplier is entitled to rely on that confirmation, and a purchaser who gives it falsely takes on the legal consequences of whatever they then do.
Related labels and how they differ
- "For in vitro diagnostic use" denotes a regulated medical device category (IVDs) with its own approval route. Research peptides are not IVDs.
- "Not for human consumption" is common on chemicals and novel substances; it states what the product is not for without stating what it is for. "Research use only" is the more specific and more informative statement.
- "Laboratory reagent" is the product category; "research use only" is the purpose restriction. Alphex uses both.
Frequently asked questions
Does the label protect a supplier who makes medicinal claims elsewhere?
No. Regulators look at the whole presentation. A research-use label alongside a page describing effects in people is a medicinal presentation with a disclaimer, and the disclaimer does not help.
Does the label prevent a researcher from doing regulated work with the material?
No. It states the basis of sale. What a researcher does subsequently is governed by the rules that apply to their research (ethics approvals, animal licences and so on), which are their responsibility.
Why does Alphex ask me to confirm research use at checkout?
