Disposal of research peptides as laboratory waste
How peptides, stocks, sharps and empty vials leave the laboratory, what to record, and the two things not to do with unused material.
Unused research peptides, expired stocks and contaminated consumables are laboratory chemical waste, and they leave the laboratory by the same route as any other reagent. The quantities are tiny and the compounds are not classified as hazardous, which is why the question is usually one of institutional procedure rather than risk. This note sets out how research peptides and their diluents are disposed of in a UK laboratory, what to record, and the two things not to do. What you are disposing of
- Lyophilised peptide in sealed or opened vials: milligram quantities of a non-hazardous solid.
- Reconstituted stocks and working solutions in water, bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol) or buffer.
- Contaminated consumables: tips, tubes, syringes and needles that have contacted peptide.
- Empty glass vials with rubber stoppers and aluminium crimps.
Classification
Research peptides of the kind in the Alphex catalogue are not classified as hazardous under CLP and are not controlled substances. Bacteriostatic water is not hazardous at 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Sharps are regulated as sharps regardless of what they contained. Solvent-containing waste (DMSO, acetonitrile from analytical work) follows the solvent's classification. So the disposal question is almost entirely governed by the vehicle and the consumable, not the peptide.
Recommended routes
- Solid peptide and small volumes of aqueous solution: the laboratory's non-hazardous chemical waste stream, in a labelled container, per institutional procedure. Do not pour peptide solutions down the drain even though they are aqueous; institutional policy almost always prohibits it, and it removes traceability.
- Peptide in organic solvent: the appropriate solvent waste stream.
- Sharps: the sharps bin. Never re-sheath needles.
- Contaminated plasticware: laboratory (non-clinical) waste, or clinical waste if the work involved biological material.
- Empty vials: laboratory glass waste. Remove or deface the label if institutional policy requires; otherwise leave the batch number legible until disposal is recorded.
Records
Record disposal against the batch number: date, quantity, route. This closes the loop opened at purchase and is what an inventory audit will look for. See record keeping.
Two things not to do
- Do not give unused material to anyone outside the laboratory. The material was supplied for laboratory research on that basis; passing it on for any other purpose is unlawful and undoes the compliance of the original purchase. See research use only: what it means.
- Do not return material to the supplier for disposal unless specifically arranged. Alphex replaces compromised vials but does not take back opened stock; dispose through your institution.
Frequently asked questions
Can I autoclave peptide waste?
Autoclaving denatures peptides and is acceptable for aqueous waste where the institution's route allows it, but it is not required; the material is not biohazardous.
What about expired sealed vials?
If in date for storage they may still be usable (see retesting); if to be discarded, the non-hazardous chemical waste route.
Does the benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water change the route?
Not at 0.9%; treat as aqueous chemical waste.
